Ebook Reader Policy
The purposes of providing electronic book readers (“readers”) are to:

Expose faculty and staff to this technology.

Encourage experimentation and exploration of how such devices might integrate into the curriculum or services of the college.
- The Library offers a Kindle checkout service to Parkland College students, staff and faculty.
"Kindle" in this policy refers to a KINDLE PACKAGE and includes:
- One Kindle reader
- One Kindle power adapter
- One USB cable
- Kindle cover
- Carrying case
TERMS
- Only current Parkland students, faculty and staff (borrower) in good standing (i.e. library account is not blocked due to unpaid fees or lost materials) can check out a Kindle.
- Borrowers are liable for any loss or damage to readers and all attachments beyond normal wear and tear. These damages will result in a fine of the full replacement cost of the reader, content, and all attachments, up to $500.
- The Kindle and all attachments must be borrowed and returned in person at the Library Service Desk during normal business hours.
- Readers may not be shipped by mail or any interlibrary delivery services.
- Readers may not be placed in any book drop.
- The loan period is 14 days with one possible renewal, dependent on the needs of the Library and other patrons.
- Non-refundable fines of $5 per day, plus $15 processing fee, will be charged if the Kindle and/or any contents of the package are overdue.
- Borrowers will be charged the full replacement cost (less overdue fines) of any reader, content, and all attachments, up to $500, if the reader and all attachments are 7 days or more overdue.
- A borrower must complete a “Kindle Package Loan Agreement” with each checkout, acknowledging financial responsibility for lost or damaged equipment.
- At the time of checkout/check-in, the Kindle will be inspected by Access Services staff to ensure the Kindle Package contents are returned in to make sure it is functioning properly.
ADDING CONTENT
- The delivered content on the Kindle (excluding iPad) will include a variety of books and periodicals.
- Each borrower may select one title at a cost less than or equal to $15.00 to be added to the reader (excluding iPad) at the expense of the Library. Please fill out the Library Suggestion Form for your request. This title and its contents will remain on the reader and be the property of Parkland College Library. This title shall be selected and added to the reader prior to check out.
- Additional iPad content will not be added by the Library but may be added by the user at her/his own expense.
- Content on the readers will be subject to Parkland College Library collection development policy.
