A Highway Construction Careers Training Program has been implemented to increase the number of minorities, women and disadvantaged individuals working on IDOT highway construction projects.


The training consists of an intensive 15-week program to learn the skills necessary for acceptance into the highway construction trades and the opportunity for a career with high wage earning potential.

The training includes, but is not limited to:
  • Math for the trades
  • Job readiness
  • First Aid / CPR / AED
  • Technical Skills Coursework
  • OSHA 30 Certification
  • HAZ MAT Handling
  • Aerial Lift & Scissor Lift
  • Flagger Certification
  • Fork Lift & Extended Reach Fork Lift
  • Introduction to Electrical / Plumbing / Sheet Metal
  • Scaffolding Erection
  • Introduction to Welding
  • Skid Steer
  • Backhoe / End Loader
  • Crane Safety and Rigging
  • Crane Signaling

The Highway Construction Careers Training Program is a fifteen-week program that will start again on Tuesday, March 3, 2015.  It runs Tuesday through Friday, 7:50 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

The Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois Community College Board, and the participating community colleges do not guarantee employment upon trainees' graduation from the Highway Construction Careers Training Program.
